As she drifted into sleep each and
every night, she could sense the forest grow around her. The ordinary bedroom
where she slept would float away like a stray thought, and an ethereal nature
would take its place. She’d awaken with a mind foggy, and her senses dulled on
a bed of leaves and flowers. Her eyes would gaze up at the unfamiliar night
sky, filled with stars and celestial bodies that could only exist in one’s
wildest dreams.
She’d lift herself from the bed of
nature and begin her walk into this fantasy. Dressed only in a garb resembling
a nightgown, one she had no memory of putting on, that trailed along the ground
like a mass of hair. Yet, despite being dragged along the forest floor, the
mysterious dress did not catch or dirty. It swept across the ground like a low
hanging cloud.
She’d traversed the forest and take
in all its sights. Every tree was thin and seemed to stretch into the heavens,
but she could never quite see where their tops were. Each tree stood precisely
a meter apart in every direction, not one strayed from this pattern. In some
ways, it was more like a forest of bamboo, yet the distinctive brown bark
betrayed any such comparison.
No matter where she’d walk, the
sights would never change. The celestial bodies above remained static to her
view, while the trees seemed endless in every direction. Even the bed of
flowers and leaves where she awakened was not unique. More could be seen every
several meters in their own infinite pattern.
This place, its name she did not know. She’d
never seen another soul within it either, not even a small animal or buzzing
insect. The forest was soundless, without even a breeze of wind. Even her own
voice failed to carry.
She had dismissed this place as a
dream for so very long. But, as it repeated, each and every night, she could no
longer ignore its presence. Lost in this forest, which went on forever, she
could only wander and observe until she grew tired. As her mind became foggier
and her body heavier, she’d settle down on another bed of flowers and slip into
a new sleep.
As she drifted into sleep, she could
sense the forest fade around her. The ordinary bedroom where she closed her
eyes previous, would pull back into view. The unfamiliar night sky, the endless
trees without tops, and soundless land were slowly replaced by her own reality.
As she sat up in bed each and every morning, dressed in her own clothes and
sleeping in her own bed, she’d ponder her strange experience. There was only
one question in her mind, which haunted her each day. Which part was the dream,
here or there?
