Serena stared out her window at the never-ending rainstorm. She used to love the rain, its sights, smells, and sounds. It was calming in a way. Now, she can only dread its arrival because Princess Irene also loved the rain…and the mud. Not a storm has passed without Serena needing to give the princess an extra bath or two or three.
‘At least she’s in bed now. If I’m lucky, it’ll dry up overnight,’ Serena sighed and prepared to roll back into her bed for the night. However, when she opened her eyes for one last glance out the window, she spotted someone in the rain. ‘Is that, Lady Herme?’
The kingdom’s lead scientist was out and about with her raincoat and umbrella. She was just strolling through the rain as if she were the star of her own musical. It seemed inexplicable, but who was Serena to judge people for their odd pastimes? In fact, Serena was a little jealous of how content Herme looked. The scientist looked as though she were in her own blissful little world.
‘How ridiculous,’ Serena rolled her eyes at the almost child-like display Herme was putting on. ‘I mean, who would want to prance around in the rain like that?’ She eyed her own rain jacket hanging in the corner. ‘I mean, how absurd, we’re not children anymore,’ Serena glanced at her rainboots by her door. ‘It’s just water falling from the sky,’ she reached for her umbrella, stowed under her bed.
Five minutes later, Serena was outside prancing in the rain without a care in the world. ‘I never said I wasn’t a hypocrite,’ she admitted to herself.
