Eclectic Narratives - Organized

>>>~~~~<<<

It’s perfect, but it’s not.

You organized it twice before, but now you realize it’s not quite right.

One thing was left forgotten, a second out of place, and a third left crooked.

The shelves aren’t even, the shelves aren’t full, the shelves aren’t big enough.

That’s where it’s always been, so it should be down here.

It makes more sense to put it higher, so it should be up here.

It looks nicer in the middle, so it should be right around here.

You try and try, but you’re never satisfied with the result.

You try and try, but there’s always more to do.

You try and try, but it doesn’t look quite right.

You try and try, but you realize there just isn’t enough room.

It’s an endless task and a thankless task.

You’ll be happy for doing it, but you’ll hate yourself for doing it.

It’s so satisfying to do, it’s so annoying to do.

It’ll all look perfect, it’ll all look terrible.

What else can you say but get organized?

To be organized is to be at peace, but organizing is pure madness.

Mary Brown’s Unexciting Tales #1 - The Obnoxious Presence of The Great Dr. Devilish

>>>~~~~<<<

Dr. Devilish was the (self-proclaimed) greatest supervillain in the world, and no one could halt his fury save for his most despised nemesis, Captain Justice. Their battles were the stuff of legend, but Devilish often came out as the loser in those encounters. The reason for this was simple, he always struggled to get the drop on Justice. While his genius mind was unparalleled and his technology unmatched, he was not exactly a subtle person. However, this would all change today.

“That being should be around here somewhere,” Dr. Devilish stalked the alleys of his home city of Justopolis. “How arrogant they are to think no one would notice a moving anomaly through all methods of radar and detection. If I hadn’t double-checked the readings myself, I’d believe it was a freak coincidence of simultaneous malfunctions. But while a massive reading is the most obvious thing one can see, a suspiciously large lack of readings is just as blatant.” The mad scientist monologued to himself as he scanned the area.

“I wonder what this creature could be? An alien? A creature from another dimension? A powerful sorcerer? Perhaps a newly developed form of stealth technology? I can hardly wait to discover it for myself,” he pondered. Alas, finding a being with an aura of nonexistence surrounding it was a difficult endeavor. It was doubtful he could see with his own eyes. All he could see in the alley were trash cans at that drab-looking woman and more trash cans and a drab-looking woman and a hobo and a drab-looking woman and…

“Wait, something is wrong,” Devilish snapped out of a daze. He couldn’t quite remember why he was counting the trash cans multiple times, and…what else did he see besides the hobo? Nothing right? “Hold on, my Devilish Detector will see me through this,” he put on a pair of overdesigned goggles that glowed to life. The world viewed through the goggles was broken down into its base components. It was like staring into the building blocks of reality. Which made it all the stranger when there was a woman-shaped hole in his vision. “Aha, thought you could hide from me by disguising yourself as an unassuming person, did you?”

“Are you talking to me?” The woman replied, startled.

“Yes, you!” Devilish almost pointed at the hobo before righting himself. “I do not know where you come from, but your power of being ‘un-observable’ will be mine!”

“Power? Me? That’s ridiculous. I’m the last person in the universe to have something as special as a power,” the woman denied.

“What nonsense, she thinks she can trick me, but Dr. Devilish is no fool,” he monologued. “But while she continues to feign ignorance, I shall capture her with my Devilish Stunner! Then I shall drag her paralyzed form back to my lab to discover the secrets of her mysterious powers!”

“Hello, I’m standing right here. I can hear everything you’re saying,” the woman pointed out.

“Blasted, she can read minds to?” Dr. Devilish was taken aback.

“No, you’re screaming everything out loud,” the woman explained.

“Answer me, being of unknown origin, who are you!” Dr. Devilish demanded.

            “Mary Brown,” the woman answered.

“Do not jest with me. Reveal to me your true name!” He refused to accept such an answer.

“I’m not lying, not that anyone cares whether I’m lying or telling the truth. It’s not like anyone listens to me,” Mary sighed.

“Let’s see if you keep that smart lip after you taste the wrath of my Devilish Stunner,” he pulled out what looked like a cross between a taser and a hand crossbow. “Fire!...Fire!” He pulled the trigger, but it refused to activate. “Darn safety…wait, what does it mean no target? Curses, my dedication to proper weapon safety has foiled me today. My device cannot detect your lack of presence. Ergo, it trips the safety mechanism  that prevents me from firing the weapon at an empty space!”

“Right,” Mary rolled her eyes. “I’m just going to leave before you pull out a laser or something,” she started to walk away.

“You shall not flee from me!” Dr. Devilish chased after her and, to no one’s surprise, quickly lost her. “Curses, you take your eyes off her for a moment and you lose her! Not that I actually had my eyes on her. She only showed up as a blank space in my detector…but enough with the details! I shall find you woman!” He ran into the city at a frantic pace.

“Figures,” Mary shook her head. Devilish had overtaken her immediately. If he had simply turned around, he might have spotted her. “I should get out of the city before he sends robots or something after me.” She made haste in the opposite direction this time.

Dr. Devilish continued his chase of the mysterious being throughout the rest of the day. Growing more and more desperate to locate her by the hour. Alas, he would never find her. Instead, Captain Justice found him gibbering to himself behind a coffee shop that night. Despite being the bitterest of enemies, Justice granted mercy to his foe that night and carried him off not to prison but to a therapist.

Maid in Fantasy - Mirror, Mirror On The Wall

 Story Hub: [link]

>>>~~~~<<<

Serena stared at the full-sized, ornate mirror on the wall. She could not pry her eyes off the reflective surface. If only because it refused to reflect her. Yet, it still felt like the mirror was peering into her soul.

“Serena,” Lady Aphros snapped right in the maid’s ear, knocking her out of her stupor.

“Lady Aphros, when did you get here?” Serena stumbled back.

“Five minutes ago, you’ve been staring into the mirror like a zombie,” Aphros revealed. “I called your name, but you didn’t respond until the tenth time.”

“I apologize, Lady Aphros,” Serena curtsied, “I was…” She glanced towards the mirror again and immediately realized her mistake. It took a great deal of willpower to pull her gaze away, but she managed to refocus herself on Aphros.

“Oh, I get it now, who left this old thing out?” Aphros observed the mirror with no ill effects.

“What is it?” Serena covered her eyes as she spoke to the noble.

“Just a fancy mirror with odd effects,” the blonde laughed. “Watch this. Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?” Aphros posed provocatively her expectations for the answer written plainly on her face. Alas, the mirror did not reply and still refused to show a reflection of anything. “Darn thing is broken,” Aphros huffed.

‘That’s one way to describe a mirror that doesn’t show a reflection,’ Serena rolled her eyes. “Thank you for the demonstrations, Lad Aphros, I’ll be sure to avoid this thing in the future.”

“I’m going to get to the bottom of who left it out, probably the same person who broke it,” Aphros declared before marching off. This left Serena alone with the magic mirror, the maid still struggled to keep her gaze off the enchanted reflection.

‘Clearly, it’s nothing out of a fairy tale, but,’ Serena considered, still tempted to stare at its surface. In a moment of weakness, she glanced at the surface again, but this time it was different. The surface rippled and twisted like the surface of a lake that had a stone thrown into it. Before suddenly, the reflection became a clear image, like a window into another world.

Upon the mirror’s surface was a scene in a place Serena didn’t recognize. It depicted a girl who looked like a member of the Celene royal family. The long silver hair with colored tips gave it away. In Serena’s eyes, it looked similar to a young Queen Celene, closer in age to the princesses. Alas, whoever they were, their face was turned away from the metaphorical camera, so there was no way to know for sure.

The scene was quite beautiful, almost like a piece of high art brought to life before her. Yet, Serena had the strongest urge to look away. The figure, this unknown Celene, was about to turn around, and the maid knew she didn’t want to catch sight of her eyes.

It made Serena remember that the Queen’s eyes were always hidden. Despite that, she was never afraid of the possibility of seeing the monarch’s gaze. In fact, just considering it made her deathly curious about what Queen Celene’s eyes looked like and how many secrets and wonders of the universe were contained within Her Majesty’s eyes.

However, in this instance, for this unknown figure, Serena was suddenly fearful and had no idea why. Her danger sense wasn’t going off, yet she could still feel its glimpse into the future. It was a paralyzing sensation that stole her breath and left her even more frozen in place than before.

Mustering all her strength of will, Serena whipped around and walked away from the mirror. She did not see the unknown Celene turn around. She did not want to see their eyes because, for whatever reason, the maid knew she would not like whatever those eyes told her.
