Serena stared at the full-sized, ornate mirror on the wall. She could not pry her eyes off the reflective surface. If only because it refused to reflect her. Yet, it still felt like the mirror was peering into her soul.

“Serena,” Lady Aphros snapped right in the maid’s ear, knocking her out of her stupor.

“Lady Aphros, when did you get here?” Serena stumbled back.

“Five minutes ago, you’ve been staring into the mirror like a zombie,” Aphros revealed. “I called your name, but you didn’t respond until the tenth time.”

“I apologize, Lady Aphros,” Serena curtsied, “I was…” She glanced towards the mirror again and immediately realized her mistake. It took a great deal of willpower to pull her gaze away, but she managed to refocus herself on Aphros.

“Oh, I get it now, who left this old thing out?” Aphros observed the mirror with no ill effects.

“What is it?” Serena covered her eyes as she spoke to the noble.

“Just a fancy mirror with odd effects,” the blonde laughed. “Watch this. Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?” Aphros posed provocatively her expectations for the answer written plainly on her face. Alas, the mirror did not reply and still refused to show a reflection of anything. “Darn thing is broken,” Aphros huffed.

‘That’s one way to describe a mirror that doesn’t show a reflection,’ Serena rolled her eyes. “Thank you for the demonstrations, Lad Aphros, I’ll be sure to avoid this thing in the future.”

“I’m going to get to the bottom of who left it out, probably the same person who broke it,” Aphros declared before marching off. This left Serena alone with the magic mirror, the maid still struggled to keep her gaze off the enchanted reflection.

‘Clearly, it’s nothing out of a fairy tale, but,’ Serena considered, still tempted to stare at its surface. In a moment of weakness, she glanced at the surface again, but this time it was different. The surface rippled and twisted like the surface of a lake that had a stone thrown into it. Before suddenly, the reflection became a clear image, like a window into another world.

Upon the mirror’s surface was a scene in a place Serena didn’t recognize. It depicted a girl who looked like a member of the Celene royal family. The long silver hair with colored tips gave it away. In Serena’s eyes, it looked similar to a young Queen Celene, closer in age to the princesses. Alas, whoever they were, their face was turned away from the metaphorical camera, so there was no way to know for sure.

The scene was quite beautiful, almost like a piece of high art brought to life before her. Yet, Serena had the strongest urge to look away. The figure, this unknown Celene, was about to turn around, and the maid knew she didn’t want to catch sight of her eyes.

It made Serena remember that the Queen’s eyes were always hidden. Despite that, she was never afraid of the possibility of seeing the monarch’s gaze. In fact, just considering it made her deathly curious about what Queen Celene’s eyes looked like and how many secrets and wonders of the universe were contained within Her Majesty’s eyes.

However, in this instance, for this unknown figure, Serena was suddenly fearful and had no idea why. Her danger sense wasn’t going off, yet she could still feel its glimpse into the future. It was a paralyzing sensation that stole her breath and left her even more frozen in place than before.

Mustering all her strength of will, Serena whipped around and walked away from the mirror. She did not see the unknown Celene turn around. She did not want to see their eyes because, for whatever reason, the maid knew she would not like whatever those eyes told her.
