“Dark powers come to me,” the child muttered as she began to chant over her chalk pentagram. Her darkened room was illuminated only by candlelight that shined from within skulls. Her grab was the greatest hits of both wizards and goths crossed together in a way only a preteen child could accomplish.
“Let the power rise, let the spirits awaken, let all that exists on the other side bend to my will!” The child declared as her spell reached a crescendo. Alas, the door was slammed open before it could complete, spilling in the bright midday light.
“Valval! I’m back from the store,” a blonde woman strolled into the room. The light from the hallway behind her exposed the darkened room as nothing more than a child’s. A child who happened to be obsessed with the occult and plastic skulls, but a child nonetheless.
“Accursed succubus, begone from mine sanctuary!” The child, Val, snapped at the intruder.
“Now, is that any way to greet me after I went out of my way to get you ice cream?” The blonde presented a plastic bag with two small containers of strawberry ice cream.
“Thou shalt not tempt me with simple delicacies,” the child huffed. “Besides, I hate strawberry.”
“That’s not what your mother told me,” the blonde countered. “Come on, let’s get you out of this dark and stuffy room and do something fun.”
“I know not how you bewitched my mother into thinking you were a proper candidate to be my primary caretaker, but I shall not be so easily swayed,” the girl exclaimed.
“Ah, come on. I know you’d rather be out there than stuck in here by yourself,” the blonde crouched down to bring herself to the child’s height.
“Dispel yourself of such beliefs vile succubus,” Val denied.
“You can use my name, you know,” the blonde assured.
“Ha, as if I’d be so careless as to speak a demon’s true name casually,” the child refused. “Thus, you shall only be referred to as succubus.”
“Why must you be so difficult?” The blonde sighed, used to this behavior.
“Off with thee, and take your temptations with you!” Val demanded.
“Really, even this one?” The blonde held up a movie case. It displayed “The Butterbunnies meet the Hughug Bears” on the cover. “I know you’ve been waiting for this to come out all year.”
“As If I’d be interested in such childish nonsense,” Val turned away with a shaky expression.
“Valval, you are a child,” the blonde laughed and inspected the back of the case. “Let’s see, the Butterbunnies get the surprise of their lives one summer day when the Hughug Bears appear out of a-”
“Stop, no spoilers,” Val shouted, before slapping her hands over her mouth in embarrassment.
“No spoilers? Well, I guess we better watch it then while eating ice cream, maybe?” The blonde suggested. Val tried to maintain a strong expression, but her stomach growled, betraying the child.
“Fine,” Val acquiesced, “but only if we acquire additional sustenance.” She took the blonde’s hand and allowed herself to be led out of the room.
“Of course, anything you say,” the blonde agreed as she closed the door with her barbed tail on their way out.
