Maid in Fantasy - Make Like A Tree

Orion searched the palace gardens, certain he had seen Serena walk out here earlier. Now, she was nowhere to be seen, and he was getting worried. But then, by chance, he glanced up and saw her. The maid was sitting on one of the large branches of the giant tree at the heart of the gardens.

“Serena!” The butler rushed to the tree and climbed it to speak to his friend. It was quite an endeavor, and he was impressed that Serena did this all the time when chasing after Princess Irene. “There you are, I was afraid something had happened to you.”

“Considered my luck, a good fear to have,” Serena signed as she stared at the skyline.

“You’ve been gone for almost two hours. What’s wrong?” Orion asked.

“Well, I ran out into the gardens to get some fresh air, and then I climbed the tree out of frustration and I got to thinking,” Serena explained.

“It’s not to do with nobles again, is it?” Orion winced. “Has Lady Aré assigned you some herculean task? Is Lady Ze doubling our training again? Please don’t tell me Lady Aphros is…being herself again…”

“No, it’s not them,” Serena shook her head.

“Is it the princesses then? Princess Irene hasn’t pushed you to your breaking point, has she?” Orion inquired. “I hope Princess Atlanta hasn’t vented her frustrations on you. Or has the second princess…done whatever she does…does she do anything?”

“No, not either,” the maid assured.

“Then is it Jace and Medy again? Do they intend to torment one or both of us again?” Orion asked. “Or is Penelo breaking things again?”

“No, it wasn’t…well, Penelo was breaking things, but that’s not why I’m still up here,” Serena admitted.

            “Then what?” Orion was confused.

“I realized I forgot how to get down from here,” Serena revealed. “And I forgot my phone and communicator in my room this morning.”

“Oh,” Orion felt like a fool for assuming so many things. “Don’t worry then, I’ll…oh dear,” he checked his wrist and realized he had dropped his communicator while climbing up.

“I guess that makes two of us stuck now,” Serena laughed joylessly.

“I’m sure someone will notice we’re gone and come find us,” Orion suggested.

“Let’s hope so,” Serena leaned back against the trunk of the tree. It was another hour before anyone found them, and it was Penelo. She got stuck in the tree, too. They had to wait until Lady Ze did her rounds around the palace before they were liberated.
