The journey may be long and difficult, but these times by the campfire make it all feel worth it. As I cut more vegetables for the soup the others got up to their usual dinnertime antics.
"Food, Food, bring on the grub," Alex chanted as he waved his knife and spoon around the air.
"Knock it off Alex," Lena scolded her younger companion, "The food will come when it's done, have some patience."
"But I'm hungry," Alex whined and rubbed his belly, "I can't possibly wait any longer."
"Why don't you help me write the travel log to pass the time?" Lena offered with a wry smile.
"No that's boring," Alex rolled on his back and made a faux disgusted face.
"Settle down now," Boris chimed in while he gave our oxen some water. "Don't want to strain Alex's poor, little brain now do we, Lena?"
"Yeah...hey!" Alex jumped to his feet, while Lena chuckled beside him. As the trio continued their little routine Dalton returned from the cart with a stack of plates.
"Must you two always pick on him?" Dalton asked as he handed the first plate to Ray.
"To be fair Dalton, Alex was the one acting like an idiot," Ray pointed out as she organized the rest of our ingredients.
"Not you too Ray," Alex spun around to face her, "how could you say that?"
"You're right," Ray smiled, "you don't need to act like an idiot." Alex puffed out his cheeks and made some crocodile tears in protest, but Ray's grin just grew wider. Dalton sighed and shook his head as he handed Alex a plate.
"Julian you got to help me," Alex pleaded, "these guys are all jerks."
"Don't drag me into this," I told him. Alex went back to his crocodile tear gimmick before Dalton dragged him away. Ray and Boris continued to laugh at Alex's expense, while Lena put her arm around him to comfort the boy.
Like I said, the journey may be long and difficult, but these times by the campfire make it all feel worth it. As I watched my companions continue their antics I was reminded of that fact. 'I wouldn't trade these moments for the world,' I smiled at the thought.
"Hey Julian what's so funny," Boris noticed my smile.
"Alex's face," I replied, much to Ray's amusement.
"Et tu, Julian?" Alex cried, "I thought you didn't want to be involved in this?"
"I changed my mind," I joked as Alex's eyes went wide with more crocodile tears. We continued to laugh and fool around until dinner was ready. Just another short stop on our long journey, but even these little memories are precious. I wouldn't trade them for the world.

This should be the last, or second to last, story I post before the blog revamp. I have a sizable story slated for Thursday currently to welcome the change, but I might change my mind during the last round of editing and push it to next week.
Until then Read, Comment and Enjoy.
