Eclectic Narratives #3 - Heat [#57]

~~~~
            Alone for a moment, but that's all it takes. I was under her watchful eye until now, but now she has left for the time being. I do not know when she will return, it may be second it may be hours. She left me secured, but not as well as she thought. I slipped free quite easily and was free to explore the surroundings.
            The floor was cold, the ceiling was high and the place was a general mess. I despised the cold and made my way forward. I wanted to be somewhere warm, warmth was comfortable and safe. It was basic need and desire, but that's all the more reason I needed it desperately.
            To my fortune I found it quickly, a bright light lead me towards the warmth. This stone structure stood tall and firm. Two diagonal handles served as gateway inside, it glowed orange from the heat it held within. I inched further towards it, I wanted the warmth, it needed to be mine. I reached out my hand to touch the solid stone, I could feel the warmth radiate from a distance.
            The heat grew more intense the closer I approached until I almost sweated from the sensation. It didn't matter to me though, because the warmth was mine. Then I touched it with both hands and screamed. The warmth I felt before fleeted in an instant. This was not the feeling I wanted. It was like warmth but strengthened to the point of pain. My hands released the stone, but the sensation remained. They vibrated with the sting of pain until they were stained black. My skin felt as though it would fall off, and slowly began to do so in the shape of black shards.
            Then she returned, likely from my screams. She ran down to me and picked me up gently. She cried in hysterics, and with a wave of her hand, made the stone structure's "warmth" disappear. She pulled me away to a higher place. Her cries for help echoed throughout the world, her hands poured over mind as she searched for a way to treat them.
            The rest is a blur, I was taken away by men in white to a large white building. She could not follow me, but I was so much pain I could not notice. The men in white bandaged and treated my hands. The pain faded a little, but it still stung deep into my body.
            Before I knew it I was within the place I knew as home. My hands bandaged, which ached with a dull pain. She was not there, it was a long time before I learned how much the situation affected her. The stone structure was never made warm again by her request. As for myself, while the pain faded the mark never did. On my left hand, the skin was marked with a diagonal line. Not exactly malformed, but the damage was obvious. A permanent mark, an eternal reminder of how all it takes is to be alone for a moment.
  1. I enjoyed this writing. It's a bit cryptic, but after reading over it a couple times, I was able to follow it. You've given me ideas on how to structure more of my writing. Thank you, very grateful
