Eclectic Narratives #5 - "Did I Make It?" [#66]

After that long story that took up the past two months it's time to shift back to short stories again. Here's a little piece of flash fiction I've been sitting on for a while.

I looked at the abyss before me as I stood at the top of the sheer cliff. I was tempted to jump, there was no other option. I looked back to see the wave of destruction behind me, only a few dozen meters away. I had a minute at best to make my choice. Stay here and die on my feet, or jump and die on my own terms. Such lovely options I know.
There was an astronomical chance the jump might save me, or at least buy me a couple extra seconds of life. I turned back one last time to see the wall of death, mere meters behind. What more did I have to lose? I steeled myself and primed my jump, while the last shred of my common sense provoked a moment of hesitation. However, the sound of absolute devastation behind me gave me the motivation I needed.
In an instant, I leaped from my perch and began to fall into the abyss below. It felt surreal, I fell so quickly I could hardly comprehend my surroundings. I could still hear the wave of destruction behind me as it ripped apart the cliff face. The sudden burst of energy knocked my airborne body away like a ragdoll.
I closed my eyes and waited for it all to stop as I fell further into the darkness. I fell for a long time, it felt like hours, but it was likely only minutes. Eventually, I finally hit something that stopped my descent. I laid there for some time before I realized I was still conscious. When I finally mustered up the courage to open my eyes I was greeted by only darkness. My body was numb and the sounds of absolute destruction had ceased.
I could barely move, but the surroundings were calm and quiet. I breathed a sigh of relief, I was safe, for now at least. I looked up, but everything was pitched black. There was no light, no visuals, only the sound of water drops. "So, did I make it?" I asked myself.

This was originally meant as a backup story in case I was late on a chapter of "A Stranger." However, I still wanted to post it eventually so here we are. I wrote this a long while back so I don't really remember my thought process for its creation, just that I started with the idea "Between a Rock And A Hard Place."

Until next time, Read, Commend and Enjoy.
