Serena sat alone in her small room in the palace’s servant quarters. The snowy winter night outside was blocked out by the structure’s excellent insulation. However, it was still fairly cold in her area due to convection. Not enough to be dangerous, but just enough to be annoying. The maid sighed, she missed spending winter in her much nicer and heated home. Alas, that was a privilege no longer afforded to her as a worker.
“Is this going to be my life now? Staring at this ceiling every morning and night?” Serena sighed. She associated the midpoint of the winter with a break from school and spending more time at home with her mother. A great time to catch up on hobbies or just lounge around at home with family. Not so anymore. Which wouldn’t be so bad if it were even remotely her choice or chosen path, but no, this life was forced upon her.
“Heaven forbid a heating unit, or ventilation breaks down here,” Serena pondered. “Then it’ll go from annoying to actually dangerous.” The maid hoped it wouldn’t come to that, but with all the rotten luck she had experienced in the past few months, she wasn’t discounting any possibility.
“I want to say I just want to go home. I want to say I just want to see my mother,” Serena muttered, “but right now, I just want to be anywhere but here.” The teen curled up into her bed to warm up.
“Serena,” Orion popped his head into the room, “are you busy?”
“Thankfully not,” Serena yawned. “What’s going on?”
“Well, I found an old sled in this pile of stuff Lady Aphros dumped on me last month,” the butler explained, “it’s, uh, too big for one person, though.”
“Say no more,” Serena hopped to her feet. “Did she leave you some warm clothes too?”
“I think there’s some inside the crockpots,” Orion commented.
“Crockpots? Does she just leave all her unwanted gifts on your doorstep?” Serena chuckled, “is there a stack of ugly sweaters and some touristy crap in there too?”
“Um, maybe?” Orion scratched his head as they left the room.
